In A World of Curiosities, it’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge. But something has.
Times change. You had to roll with it. But it was impossible to roll without getting bruised. What are some of the changes you’ve experienced throughout your life that you’ve had to learn to roll with? This could be the transition from landlines to cell phones, from renting movies at Blockbuster to streaming them right on your TV, etc.! Let us know in the comments.

Thank you for helping readers to become familiar with the unique mind of Armand Gamache!
Much of the bruising comes from resisting change that is taking place whether you like it or not. It is far better to adapt as much on your own terms as possible. That is resilience, and being resilient is central to a life well lived in my view.
It took me awhile to appreciate Armand. Once I did, his brilliance cannot be compared to many. Like our first mobile phone, which weighed at least one pound, to our sleek mobiles today, Gamache just gets better. When is the next book arriving?
Armand’s words are so true in today’s world. So much change is happening now….sometimes I long for the good old days.
I could count numerous bruises- some self inflicted- but all of them have led to me knowing who I am, what I value and believe and treasure
Throughout my life I have experienced many bruises. I love this description of pain. The good news is that once the bruise heals you are as good as before the wound.
Here in Florida, we’re cleaning up from Hurricane Milton. I’ve grown up in Florida, and I’m in my late sixties. Time was, we didn’t have so many hurricanes coming at us in such a short period of time. We’d go years without having one become a major storm, Now when they come, you can pretty much count on that happening.
We’re rolling with it, but we’re definitely getting bruised. Climate change is happening and it’s making a big difference in my life.
When I was getting my BEd at Ottawa U in 1987,one of the mandatory courses I had to take was an intro to computers. I relied heavily on my younger colleagues to get me through the baffling course. The final assignment was a paper on how computers would change my teaching practices. I wrote in my best cursive what I thought was a good argument why this new method wouldn’t really impact my teaching of English in any way! Needless to say, I was called into my prof’s office and given a sound reprimand. But, I had completed the assignment and so passed the course (barely).
Now, here I am, 30 some odd years later and I look back, remembering that my prof was right and I was sadly wrong.
What would I do now without my iPhone???
Learning from bruises at 75.
Jan 5, 2025. I attended North Texas State University in 1965. We had to register for classes by running all over campus with a handful of IBM punch cards filled out with our information to give to a person registering us for each class. If that class was full, then stand in another line for the next section. Had I really understood the routine, I would have signed up for phys ed first. I ended up with field hockey at 8 am twice a week. I absolutely hated every minute! However, I did not have a cold that winter. At that time, women could not wear pants on campus until you reached the gym. So across campus we went in Wind, rain or snow. Dean Dickey was a Victorian holdout. So it goes. These days I love my phone, iPad and laptop!
