- [Still Life, Part 1](https://www.gamacheseries.com/still-life-part-1/) - I recently heard Louise Penny interviewed by her publisher, and, knowing Louise now, it came as a surprise to hear her say she identified with Agent Yvette Nichol. However, here's the final paragraph in the Acknowledgements in Still Life. "I went through a period in my life when I had no friends, when the phone never rang, when I thought I would die from loneliness. I know that the real blessing here isn't that I have a book published, but that I have so many people to thank." I never knew that lonely Louise. She herself is an example of the duality she writes about. I see her much more as Clara Morrow, and, she has said that as well. (Doesn't an author put herself into many characters?) Clara is a kind woman, who really wants to belong. I only know that Louise Penny, the warm, kind woman who reaches out to others.

So, he comes away from that conversation with more questions, and a book.that forces him to search for answers in a place that makes him confront another fear. He has to climb to the hunting blind, and he's afraid of heights. But, it's there he has a conversation with Clara that opens her eyes that someone local is a killer, and their feelings have been festering. As Gamache waits, he learns more about the villagers. Ruth Zardo is one of Canada's most famous poets. And, Clara and the villagers have a different view of the deceased Timmer Hadley than Myrna did. They've known Timmer longer, as Ben's mother, a hateful woman who terrorized her son.
- [A Fatal Grace, Part 1](https://www.gamacheseries.com/a-fatal-grace-part-1/) - I started working with Louise in October 2006, after the editor who had bought her first three books left Minotaur for another company. At the time, only Still Life had been published. A Fatal Grace was in bound galleys, and The Cruelest Month was a completed manuscript in search of a title. Since I needed to read three books in a row, it was lucky that I loved them from the start. Although Louise had me from the acknowledgments at the beginning of Still Life, there came a scene in A Fatal Grace that gave me chills in a way that only the very best manuscripts ever have. (I describe that scene in the recap below.) I even remember where I was when I read it. In those days I had an hour-long commute on the train. I know that I started reading the galleys on the train on a Tuesday night, then continued on Wednesday morning, when we always have our editorial meetings. By the time I got to that meeting, I couldn’t stop talking about how amazing Louise was, except perhaps to ignore everyone else and keep reading more of the story.

Having learned that CC de Poitiers, who claimed to be the daughter of Eleanor and Henri de Poitiers, invented both her name and her past (Eleanor de Poitiers, better known as Eleanor of Aquitaine, actually died in 1204), Gamache needs to find out who CC really was. Are there any significant clues to be found in the video cassette of The Lion in Winter that turned up in CC's garbage after the murder? Meanwhile, Gamache is astonished when Clara proudly shows him the Li Bien ornament Peter gave her for Christmas, which is exactly like the ball CC supposedly used as the basis for her garbled philosophy. The glass ball is painted with three pine trees, the word Noël, and a single capital letter, L. Was it the picture of the trees that prompted CC to buy the monstrous old Hadley house in Three Pines? Awkwardly, Peter is forced to confess that while he meant to buy Clara something for Christmas this year, he actually found the ball in the Williamsburg dump.

I use the scientific method of reading "what calls to me"—so a vast majority of the "pile" goes unread. Several years ago of course I got an advanced reading copy of Still Life, which languished in the pile. The cover didn't call to me. But then I got a letter from Julia Spencer-Fleming, who uses her powers for good: she sometimes sends around a letter to booksellers highlighting a book she feels passionately about, and Still Life was the topic of one of the first of these letters.

The meaning of this becomes clear later. Hazel plans Madeleine's funeral and thinks "Everything had changed. Even her grammar. Suddenly she lived in the past tense. And the singular." What a profound description of grief. Hazel is busy waiting on Sophie, who has injured her foot.

The shock only aggravates her loneliness in this very beautiful yet remote setting.

A casual look around the cabin reveals that several items all have one name in common, Charlotte.

My dad couldn't hold a book or maneuver a cd player at that point so this was perfect for him. I had read great reviews of Louise Penny's books and had always meant to try one. So Dad started reading The Brutal Telling and was thrilled to tell me and my husband, Joe (also a librarian!), all about it. . . .

Tebaldi was a robust woman, decked in a gorgeous dress featuring real camellias, so the idea that she grows increasing frail and dies of consumption reeked of miscasting—except that her voice was glorious, passionate, convincing, the music moving, so in the end I accepted Violetta’s fate. Music made me believe, music was the passport to Verdi’s story, into a world where its logic, if you can call it that, ruled.
