Bury Your Dead Postcard

“Quebec City. Bitterly cold but managing to get out into this gorgeous old city, researching BURY YOUR DEAD. We’re having a blast – but man, is it cold!”

AN EXCERPT FROM BURY YOUR DEAD

Instead of heading straight in to the Château Frontenac he decided to stroll along the Dufferin Terrace, the long wooden boardwalk that swept in front of the hotel and overlooked the St. Lawrence River. In the summer it was filled with ice cream carts and musicians and people relaxing in the pergolas. In the winter a bitter damp wind blew down the St. Lawrence River and hit pedestrians, stealing their breaths and practically peeling the skin off their faces. But still people walked along the outdoor terrasse, so remarkable was the view.

And there was another attraction. La glissade. The ice slide. Built every winter it towered above the promenade. As he turned the corner of the Château the wind hit Gamache’s face. Tears sprung to his eyes and froze. Ahead, midway along the terrasse, he could see the slide, three lanes wide with stairs cut into the snow at the side. Even on this brittle day kids were lugging their rented toboggans up the steps. In fact, the colder the day the better. The ice would be keen and the toboggans would race down the steep slope, shooting off the end. Some toboggans were going so fast and so far pedestrians on the terrasse had to leap out of their way.

As he watched he noticed it wasn’t just kids climbing to the top, but adults as well including a few young couples. It was as effective as a scary movie to get a hug, and he remembered clearly coming to the slide with Reine- Marie early in their relationship. Climbing to the top,
dragging the long toboggan with them, waiting their turn. Gamache, deathly afraid of heights, was still trying to pretend otherwise with this girl who’d stolen his heart so completely.

Thank you for the opportunity to read these vignettes. I’ve just purchased a ticket for your Halifax appearance in December. Looking forward to seeing you!

My husband, brother, & I visited this beautiful city 3 weeks ago! Everywhere I turned I saw another scene from your book. I took an obscene number of pictures. We walked across the Plains of Abraham and marveled at The St. Lawrence, a river much larger than any here in Oklahoma! Thank you for taking a couple of Oklahoma farmers to a place we would never have gone without your books!

This is a wonderful postcard! We were just in QC last week and I saw this slide. We also did the “Bury Your Dead” tour and it was wonderful! Felt so connected to the city through the eyes of Louise Penny and her wonderful book. The Lit & His Society Library was the highlight for me!

Had been to Quebec City many moons ago…for Winter Carnaval, but never experienced the terraces in winter….something to look forward to!!!

The postcards are wonderful…and this one with Michael brings joy.

Thank you for these wonderful post cards, Louise. I have started to read your books over again; looking forward to this winter.

We are here in Quebec City and saw the slide yesterday. Yikes, I don’t think so! We had a Bury Your Dead Tour and fell in love with “Emile’s house”. Having a blast. Wish you were here!!

I have thus far only visited Quebec City in the summer and fall. Can hardly wait to go on a brusque, snowy day and slide down in a toboggan. Also afraid of heights, but if Gamache can do it, I’m game!!

Here’s where my Gamache addiction started. I love reading books set in a place I’m visiting. Bury Your Dead was my pick for a trip to QC. Fell in love with both.

I agree entirely…I love old Quebec and Quebec period…and I love the Gamache series, I’m addicted to it and I love Louise Penny, she is a very wonderful writer and I can’t wait for the next books I love love love them.

Thank you !

My addiction started with Still Life. Attracted by the title as an artist, I fell in love with Three Pines. I had already visited Quebec City and found it to be intoxicating. Louise Penny’s books are pre-ordered as soon as the option is available. I can’t wait to revisit my friends in Three Pines.

This wonderful story inspired a trip to Quebec City for my husband and I 3 years ago. We went in the fall, stayed at the Frontenac and strolled the terrasse. Such a lovely experience made richer by your book. Thanks for your wonderful writing and beloved characters! ❤️

Us too June 2018. Love of the book brought us to Quebec City but love of the City will bring us back someday.

We had a trip to Quebec planned for this month, October 2018, but due to health issues, we have had to put it off. All of Louise Penny’s books have inspired me to “find” Three Pines, walk through Old Quebec City, and generally get lost in all things French Canadian.

Thank you so much for these postcards. What wonderful insights into your books….and a wonderful way to start my day. I find I enjoy each book even more each time I reread it. Thank you.
